Until a few years ago, this was the most used furnace in homes. A single-stage furnace has a gas valve that can operate at one speed, meaning the unit will be either on or off. Most new single-stage furnaces will have a blower motor with a few different speeds built-in to control the air circulation within the home. These units will be 92% to 96% efficient.
